A rally in Rio de Janeiro against baring all on the beach saw women take their tops off - but there were more photographers than protesters. A protest against Brazil's ban on topless sunbathing fell flat yesterday, with only a handful of women turning up. Thousands of women were expected to gather on Rio de Janeiro's Ipanema beach, taking off their bikinis in defiance of Brazilian law, which describes female toplessness as an "obscene act". Hundreds of photographers filled Ipanema beach, eager to catch a glimpse of the first women to strip in defiance of the law - but only a few women joined in. She told local media "A breast isn't dangerous! It's false-Puritanism and indicative of our macho culture that we have a law forbidding that women can go topless. The anti-nudity law, which dates back to the s, is punishable by up to a year in prison, or fines. The protest was organised in response to an incident in November when actress Cristina Flores was stopped by police during a half-naked photoshoot on the beach. The two-night extravaganza began in the Sambodromo, where 72, spectators sat in sweltering heat, with many thousands more milling around outside selling drinks, putting on costumes or simply soaking up the atmosphere. Three of the samba schools taking openly critical stands against the political and corruption crisis that has engulfed Latin America's biggest country over the last four years. Even by Brazil's deteriorating standards, Rio de Janeiro is in particularly deep financial trouble, while crime in many areas is out of control. Two children were among the dead in shootings last week and a policeman was reported Sunday to have been shot dead in a suburb - the 16th officer killed already this year. So although 17, police have been deployed for the carnival, large parts of Rio, like Rocinha or City of God, are virtual no-go zones for both police and tourists. Locals in those areas, dubbed favelas, have to survive in the crossfire of drug gangs and the security forces. To make matters worse for the passionate carnival-going public, Mayor Marcelo Crivella - a bishop in the evangelical mega church founded by his billionaire uncle - has cut subsidies to the annual bash in half. George Damiao, 38, who was taking part in the Imperio Serrano school's parade, said: "The schools had to use every trick to find sponsors at the last minute and make miracles for the parade to happen. Unusually for a mayor, Crivella is not even expected to come anywhere near the parades.
It is the east end of Grumari Beach. Regulated by an assossiation, though it has no need for that since the municipality just officialized it. As many other nude beaches, or should say almost all the nude beaches, the setting is great and the goers are mainly people that you might think they shouldn't be in that place. It is very far from Rio, still way further out from Barra da Tijuca. I take 1h30min by car from Copacabana. It is worth it. Really beautiful over there. The beach is tiny and if the tide is high the sand can be reduced to almost nothing. The gay men prefer to stay in the end and straight men and couples stay in the first half. Summer time you have to go very early in the morning or after pm or you will spend another our to reach it from Prainha in a bump to bump traffic totally still and no places to park.

The protest, in which seven women publicly exposed their breasts for several minutes, attracted a good number of curious passersby and journalists to the iconic Rio beach, which was jammed with people because of a local holiday, IANS reported.
